What is a Tooth-Colored Filling?

Tooth-colored fillings are dental restorations designed to fill the decayed areas of teeth and seal them off, preventing the damage from progressing. If the issue spreads, it could lead to more serious problems like toothaches, infections, and even tooth loss. However, our team’s goal is to keep that from happening with bi-annual checkups and cleanings!

If we do spot a cavity at your visit, we will recommend a tooth-colored filling. This is a method of clearing away and repairing the decayed portion of a tooth using composite resin, which is a tooth-colored biocompatible material that’s putty-like in texture.

The Process of Getting a Dental Filling

Dental fillings don’t typically take a long time to place. Dr. Hirji will start by clearing away any debris from the tooth and sanitizing the area to make sure no bacteria become trapped beneath the filling. He will match the shade of your teeth using a guide, which will let him know which shade of composite resin will best blend in with your natural smile.

If the decay is moderate or more severe, your mouth will be numbed before the procedure, but in some cases, this isn’t necessary. Using the composite resin, Dr. Hirji will fill in the decayed portion of the tooth and cure it using UV light. This will harden the restoration and make it function like your natural tooth. He’ll make sure your bite is even and make any final adjustments before polishing the restoration and sending you on your way!

The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored fillings offer an array of benefits, including:

  • Natural-Looking Results: The lifelike appearance of composite resin makes it so that you won’t be able to tell which of your teeth has received a filling!
  • Preservation of Natural Dental Structure: Due to the biocompatible nature of composite resin, less of your natural tooth’s structure needs to be altered in order to seat the restoration securely within the tooth.
  • Durability & Strength: With good maintenance, dental fillings can last for over five years.
  • Affordability: Tooth-colored fillings are largely covered by dental insurance plans (although, keep in mind that every plan is different).
